Hartford

Hartford is located in Hartford County and is the county seat. It is situated just northeast of New Britain between East Hartford and Glastonbury, along Interstate 91 on the banks of the Connecticut River.

Hartford is the capital city of Connecticut and the largest city in the state. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 131,523, a decrease of 8,216 since 1990.

A group from Newtown, Massachusetts, settled on the site in 1635. In the spring of 1636, another group headed by the Reverend Thomas Hooker arrived. The colony then adopted the Hartford Constitution, known as the Fundamental Orders, in 1639. This served as a model for the Constitution of the United States a century and a half later.

Hartford is famous for the large number of insurance companies which have their headquarters here.

Hartford is part of the Hartford, Connecticut metro area.
