Old State House |
It was on the site of the Old State House that the first written constitution guaranteeing the right to representative government was enacted by the English colonists. This is why Connecticut is known as "The Constitution State".
Designed by Charles Bulfinch, this 1796 Federal-style building was the site of the Hartford Convention and the first Amistad trial.
Exhibits feature costumed interpreters portraying pivotal figures in Hartford's history.
Steward's Museum, established in 1797, features paintings and curiosities, including a two-headed calf and an 8.5 foot alligator.
Guided tours of the State House are available by reservation. Open Monday - Friday, 10am-4pm, Saturday, 11am-4pm; closed major holidays.
