The parish was founded in 1752; worship took place for over half a century in a wooden structure at the southwest corner of Chapel and Church streets. The cornerstone of the present church was laid in the spring of 1814. The completed edifice was consecrated on February 21, 1816. Designed by Ithiel Town, the church is one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival in America.
