Online Highways Home > Connecticut > Hartford City Map with Features Wadsworth Atheneum Founded in 1842 and said to be the nation's oldest continuously operated public art museum, this building houses nearly 50,000 works including a large collection of Hudson River School landscape paintings, 16th and 17th century European paintings, Impressionist masterpieces, 20th century art, decorative arts and Colonial furniture. Also featured are two fully restored period rooms, a costume and textiles collection, European porcelain and two galleries of African-American art and artifacts. Open Tuesday - Sunday, 11am-5pm; closed January 1, July 4, Thanksgiving, and December 25.
