The largest of Florida's national forests encompasses 564,000 acres that include wet lowlands abounding with cypress, oak and magnolias; stands of slash and longleaf pines cover the sandhills and flatwoods. The forest contains two rivers, the Ochlockonee and the Sopchoppy, that are part of the State's Recreational Trails System. Fort Gadsden Historic Site and the Leon Sinks Geological Area are both located within the forest boundaries, as well two designated wilderness areas. Swimming, picnicking, boating, and camping are featured at the most highly developed campgrounds in the forest,- Hitchcock, Camel Lake, and Wright Lake Recreation Areas. Three boat landings,- Big Gully, Revell, and White Oak,- are are available for use. A portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail, and the Munon Hills Off-Road Bicycle Trail offer quiet exploration of remote forest areas.
