The Saint-Germain abbey, a nearly intact monastic complex, has existed for over 1,000 years. Founded by Queen Clothilde, the wife of Clovis, Frances first Christian king, the church features 9th century crypts adorned with some of the oldest mural paintings in France. Recent archaeological digs have revealed artifacts from the 6th-18th centuries.Housed within the former abbey is the Musee dArt et dHistoire, exhibiting prehistoric, Gallo-Roman and medieval collections.
