To learn more about Douai's mining heritage visit the museum at Centre Historique Minier de Lewarde located 8 kms east of Douai. Delloye Colliery closed in 1971 and is now home to the largest mining museum in France. The tour of the mine starts in the pithead baths. A recorded English commentary is provided via headphones. Ex-miners lead the way through reconstructions of galleries and tell visitors about the working conditions and the lives of the men and women in the mining communities.
