Built in 1907 to replace the old museum which had outgrown its space, the museum was renovated in 1986-87 by J-M Willmotte. A large Roman mosaic, discovered on the site of the central fruit and vegetable market, covers the central part of the entry hall on the main floor. The collection includes Flemish and Dutch paintings, Italian works from the 16th and 17th century and a remarkable collection of 19th-century works from the French school.
