James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), the largest of the O`ahu refuges, is a bird watcher's delight complete with a visitor kiosk, interpretive signs, and both guided and self-interpretive tours. The refuge was established specifically for the endangered Hawaiian stilt, coot, moorhen, and duck. It also provides essential habitat for wintering migratory birds coming from as far away as Alaska, New Zealand, and Asia. Public use is welcome from August 1 to February 15 and closed during the rest of the year for the stilt breeding season. Guided public tours are offered on Thursdays (4-5:30 p.m.) and on Saturdays (3:30-5 p.m.).
