Kalanikaula

This is the site of the sacred kukui grove planted by the kahuna (spiritual leader) Lanikaula. It is one of Hawaii's most sacred sites. The kukui tree, also call candlenut, is an oily fruit that can be a flambeau (torch).

The gray bark trees shelter the grave of the kahuna, but they are now dying out. A short distance to the north is Hipuapua Falls, a 500 foot water fall. The grove is located just before Hwy 450 descends into the Halawa Valley.
