Hale Ho'ola Hamakua (HHH), originally known as Honoka'a Hospital, has served the healthcare needs of the communities of Hamakua and North Hawaii since 1951. In November 1995, a new facility was opened above the old hospital, to provide long-term-care services. The new facility has 48 skilled nursing (SNF) and intermediate care (ICF) beds as well as 2 acute beds. HHH has an annual long-term-care occupancy rate of 95%. To reflect the primary focus of HHH's services to the community, the hospital was renamed Hale Ho'ola Hamakua- Haven of Wellness/Wellness of Hamakua.
An active part of the Hamakua community, HHH employs a staff of 80, of which almost 20% were displaced Hamakua Sugar Plantation workers, now employed as nurse's aides. Situated next to HHH is Hamakua Health Center, which provides outpatient services to the community in a building owned and leased from HHH.
