An unknown soldier killed in the
Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941 was the first burial in the National Cemetery of the Pacific. Located in the
Punchbowl, there are over 33,000 veterans buried in the bottom of this inactive volcanic crater.
The Memorial Building houses a chapel and mosaic gallery of Pacific Theatre conflicts. It is open daily from 8am to 6:30pm.
The Hawaiian name for Punchbowl is Puowaina, or "Hill of Sacrifice".
