H-1 is the main freeway on the south coast of
Oahu Island. It begins at a junction with Farrington Hwy (Hwy 93) and joins H-2 and Kamehameha Hwy (Hwy 99) at
Pearl City. The Nimitz Hwy (Hwy 92) parallels H-1.
It becomes Ala Moana Blvd at Honolulu Harbor, then Kalakaua Ave in the Waikiki area. Kalanianaole Hwy (Hwy 72) is the route into Honolulu from Koko Head and the Windward Coast, where it joins H-1.
Pali Hwy (Hwy 61) and Likelike Hwy (Hwy 63) enter Honolulu by tunnels through the Koolau Mtns. H-3 connects Pearl City with Kailua via a tunnel also.
The isle has a 112 mile coastline. Hawaiians use the following terms for directions: makai is towards the sea, mauka is toward the mountains, windward is east shore and leeward is west shore.
