Belleville is located in southwestern Illinois in St. Clair County (of which it is the county seat) about 15 miles southeast of St Louis. It lies along Highway 15 near the Mississippi River and the Missouri state line. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 40,734, a decrease of 2,072 since 1990.The Cathedral of St. Peter is the largest in Illinois with its gothic arches that tower 90 feet above the floor. In addition, the Our Lady of the Snows National Shrine is the largest outdoor shrine in the U.S. For those wanting continuing education, the town offers Belleville Area College. Other local attractions include a nice variety of golf courses including Clinton Hill Golf Course, Elmwood Golf Course on Eiler Rd., Orchards Golf Course on Golf Course Dr., Yorktown Golf Complex on Anderson Ln. and Westhaven Golf Club on Maple Dr.
