St. Clair County |
St. Clair county was the first county established in Illinois from the Northwest Territory and is named for the first Territorial Governor, Arthur St. Clair. It is located in southwestern Illinois along the banks of the Mississippi River directly across from St Louis.
The Cathedral of St. Peter in Belleville, the county seat, is Illinois' largest with vaulted Gothic arches rising 90 feet above the floor.
The "Gateway Geyser" fountain in East St. Louis is the world's largest at 627 feet and positioned in the center of a reflecting pool measuring 600 feet in diameter. It holds five million gallons of water and covers about 6.5 acres.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 260,050, a decrease of 2,802 over the 1990 census.
