Eldred is located in southwestern Illinois in southwestern Greene County about 45 miles north of St Louis between Alton and Pittsfield along Highway 108 three miles east of the Illinois River and about 10 miles inland from the Mississippi River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 266, an increase of 12 since 1990.
