Greene county was formed in 1821 from
Madison County in central Illinois and is named for Nathaniel Greene, a famous Revolutionary War Major General. Is is located southwest of
Springfield, the state capital, and
Sangamon County.
The original county boundaries included present-day Jersey County, which was spun off in 1839.
The county seat is Carrollton and the population on July 1, 1999, was 15,737, an increase of 420 over the 1990 census.
Historically significant sites include the Carrollton Courthouse Square Historic District and the Columbiana Archeological Site in Eldred.
