Mahomet is located in central Illinois in
Champaign County about 10 miles northwest of
Champaign along
Interstate 74 and U.S. Highway 150 on the banks of the
Sangamon River about 15 miles east of
Clinton Lake and the
Clinton Lake State Park area.
The town is a base for charming living, shopping and outdoor activities including Lake of the Woods County Park which offers golf, hiking, biking and lake activities.
The population estimate for 2000 was about 5,000.
