Marshall is located in eastern Illinois in Clark County (of which it is the county seat) 40 miles east-southeast of Mattoon about 10 miles west of the Wabash River and 15 miles west-southwest of Terre Haute, IN. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 3,438, a decrease of 117 since 1990.The Archer House, a former stagecoach stop built in 1841, is the oldest hotel in Illinois and is located at the intersection of Route 1 and the National Road (Route 40). For outdoor lovers, the town is just a few minutes north of Lincoln Trail State Park. For golfers, the town offers the Marshall Golf Course.
