Clark county is located in east central Illinois on the banks of the Wabash River. It is named for explorer George Rogers Clark.
Historical structures and places include the Millhouse Blacksmith Shop and the Old Stone Arch Bridge. In early American architecture bridges were made out of stones that were precisely cut and fitted together without bond or mortar. Several were built along the Old National Road between Cumberland, MD, and Vandalia.
The county seat is Marshall and the population on July 1, 1999, was 16,551, an increase of 630 over the 1990 census.
The Archer House in Marshall, a former stagecoach stop built in 1841, is Illinois' oldest hotel.
