Meredosia NWR

The Meredosia National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1973, is located in western Illinois along the Illinois River in Cass County and Morgan County. At this writing it contains about 2,850 acres with another 2,400 to be purchased from landowners. When completed the complex will include backwater lakes, upland and bottomland forests, natural sand prairie, seasonal wetlands, and a permanent marsh environment benefitting the many species of migratory birds, fish, and native wildlife historically present in the area. As a functioning floodplain/wetland complex, the Refuge will "play a vital role in perpetuating biological diversity in the Illinois River basin."
