Morgan County |
Morgan county was formed in 1823 from parts of Madison County and is located in west central Illinois, WSW of Springfield, the State Capital. The current boundaries were set in 1845.
It is named for Daniel Morgan who rose through the military ranks to become a Brigadier General in the Revolutionary War. He commanded the "Rifle Brigade" and was involved in several skirmishes including the Cowpens battle in South Carolina. That battle, along with the Kings Mountain victory, turned the tide in favor of the patriots.
Educational opportunities in Morgan county include Illinois College and MacMurray College.
The county seat is Jacksonville and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 35,158, a decrease of 1,239 over the 1990 census.
