Cass County |
Cass county is located in central Illinois and was formed in 1837 out of the northern part of Morgan County. It is named in honor of Brigadier Gen. Lewis Cass, an Ohioan that served as Secretary of State under President James Buchanan.
The county has several historic structures listed in the National Register including the Beardstown Grand Opera House and the Prairie Adobe House just outside Virginia, the county seat.
The Sangamon River empties into the Illinois River just north of Beardstown. The area is blessed with the Sanganois Conservation Area near Crane Lake. In addition, the Jim Edgar Panther Creek SFWA is located just NNE of Virginia.
The population on July 1, 1999, was 13,256, a decrease of 181 over the 1990 census.
