Normal is located in central Illinois in McLean County just east of Bloomington near Evergreen Lake and Lake Bloomington. Most refer to the area as "Bloomington-Normal" in deference to their "twin city" status.
The city is home to Illinois State University and Heartland Community College for those desiring to extend their educational experience beyond the high school level. Among the outstanding features of the University are the Planetarium and the Aquaculture Research Facility.
In the sporting world, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame is located here. It honors the great moments, efforts, players, coaches and friends of basketball in the state. Golfers will enjoy the challenge of Ironwood Golf Course, University Golf Course and Royal Links Golf Course.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 44,221, an increase of 4,198 since 1990.
