Petersburg is located in central Illinois in
Menard County (of which it is the county seat) just northwest of
Springfield along Highway 97 on the banks of the
Sangamon River.
Lincoln's New Salem State Park provides the area with an opportunity to revisit the 1830s. The town is faithfully restored and is an active community involved in period activities.
The poulation estimate for 2000 was about 2,300.
