Plainview is located in southwestern Illinois in Macoupin County about 30 miles north-northeast of St Louis and 10 miles southwest of Carlinville along Highway 735 near Gillespie Lake. Beaver Dam State Park, about 5 miles north of town, provides fishing, camping and electric motor boating on the 60-acre lake. Eight miles of hiking/cross county ski trails await nature lovers.
