Sterling Illinois

Sterling is located in Whiteside County northeast of Davenport, IA, between Rock Falls, its sister city, and Dixon just north of Interstate 88 on the banks of the Rock River. It is about 115 miles west of Chicago and 30 miles east of the Mississippi River. At one time it was called the "Hardware Capital of the World located in the heart of the Nation's Breadbasket".

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 14,623, a decrease of 519 since 1990.
