Search Visit Illinois

The Tamaroa were one of six tribes that made up the The Illiniwek Confederation that also included The Kaskaskia, The Peoria, The Cahokia, The Michigamea and The Moingwena. The tribe could be found on both sides of the Mississippi River near the mouths of the Illinois River and the Missouri River. A large contingent lived near the "city" of Cahokia (founded in 1699) southeast of St Louis.

The Tamaroa were closely related to the Cahokia and as such were involved with the expeditions and missions established by Louis Joliet and Pere (Father) Jacques Marquette beginning in 1673.

With the signing of the Treaty of Paris, the end of French occupation of the Illini country was to signal the beginning of the end for all the tribes of the Illiniwek. This was due to them aligning with the French, angering the Iroquios, Fox, Chickasaw and Potawatomi.
