Peoria County |
Peoria county, located in central Illinois, was created in 1825 and is situated on the Illinois River north of Springfield, the State Capital.
Founded in 1892, Bradley University is recognized as one of the top 40 private Universities in the nation. It is located in the county seat of Peoria.
Peoria was the first European settlement in Illinois and French Fort Crevecoeur, on the east bluff of the Peoria River, was the first building.
Peoria's fresh water, large corn reserves and easy transportation (via the river) all combined to make the city the "Whiskey Capital of the World" by 1900.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 181,126, a decrease of 1,701 over the 1990 census.
