Fulton County |
Named for Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat in 1807, the county was established in 1823 from parts of Pike County in west central Illinois.
The county was formed early in Illinois history and as such covered a vast area--most of Illinois north of the Illinois River. It later gave rise to Knox County, Peoria County and Schuyler County.
Among the noted personalities of the county is Edgar Lee Masters, author of the Spoon River Anthology. Many literary critics consider the work to be on a par with Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.
The county seat is Lewistown and the population on July 1, 1999, was 38,679, an increase of 599 over the 1990 census.
