Marshall county was created in 1839 from parts of Putnam County and is located in north central Illinois just northeast of Peoria and Peoria County. The final boundaries were set in 1843.
It is named for John Marshall who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and later served as Secretary of State and, most notably, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice.
The Illinois River flows through the middle of the county on its way to join the Mississippi River and Interstate 39 runs through the eastern section connecting Bloomington and La Salle.
The county seat is Lacon and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 12,974, an increase of 128 over the 1990 census.
