Wabash County |
Wabash county was created in 1824 from Edwards County after no agreement could be reached on the placement of the county seat. The county is located in southern Illinois on the banks of the Wabash River.
Its county seat is Mt. Carmel and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 12,513, a decrease of 598 over the 1990 census. Wabash Valley College is located in Mt. Carmel to serve the county's need for continued education beyond the high school level.
For nature lovers, Beall Woods State Park is located just west of Mt. Carmel and is one of the largest deciduous forests in the U.S.
