Cavan is an inland county in
Ulster Province, though not in
Northern Ireland. It is bounded on the north by
County Fermanagh, on the northeast and east by
County Monaghan, on the south by
County Meath and
Westmeath, and on the southwest by
Longford. It covers an area of 746 square miles.< The Millstone Grit Mountains rise in the southeast to a height of 2188 feet. The
River Shannon has its source here. Other rivers include the Erne and Annalee. Numerous small lakes are found in the county.
Antiquities include cairns, raths, the sixth-century St. Columcille's monastery at Drumlane and the 11th-century Cloughoughter's Castle. The county town is Cavan. Other significant towns are Bailieborough and Cootehill.
