Westmeath is a county in Ireland in
Leinster Province Province, bordered on the northwest by
Longford, on the north by
County Cavan, on the east by
County Meath, on the south by
County Offaly, and separated from
Roscommon on the west by the
River Shannon and the Lough Ree, the latter a widening of the river. It was separated from Meath in 1543.
The surface is gently undulating, no height rising above 800 feet. Bogs take up some area, as do numerous lakes. The capital, Mullingar, is connected by canal with Dublin. The other town of importance is Athlone.
