Founded in 1847 and located in
Morris County, (County Seat). Current population estimate, 2371, Elev. 1233 Council Grove is northwest of
Emporia and along Hwy 57. The community was built on the banks of the
Neosho River near
Council Grove Lake. The historic Santa Fe trail runs through the town at the historic
Neosho River Crossing.
In 1825 growing traffic over the Santa Fe trail brought a government survey and right-of-way treaties with the Osage Native American nation. A large grove of trees became the rendezvous for westward bound wagon trains. The Kaw Mission State Historic Site is a popular attraction.
