The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 24,462, a decrease of 1,050 since 1990. Located in Lyon County, (county seat), in the Central Region of the state and SW of Topeka. Situated along I-35 near Melvern Lake and John Redmond Reservoir as well as Lyon State Lake.The Emporia State University, The Kansas School Naturalist, Flint Hills Technical College and Flint Hills Technical College are popular accredited schools. The Neosho River runs SW through Emporia to merge with the Cottonwood Falls S of town. Attractions include: Emporia Zoo, National Teachers Hall of Fame. Empporia is the founding city of Veterans Day and home of the All Veterans Tribute.
