Courtland is located in Republic County, in the North Central Region of the state and is west of Belleville, along US Hwy 36. This community is near Lovewell State Park and the Pawnee Indian Village Museum. The Republican River is about six miles to the west of town. In addition to two historical museums, the High Banks Hall of Fame is also in Courtland. The Belleville Midget Nationals car races are held every August at the Belleville High Banks dirt track.
