Kanopolis Kansas

Founded: 1885, Population: 543, Elevation: 1574 feet. Kanopolis is located in the North Central Region of the state, in Ellsworth County, southeast of Ellsworth, (which is the County Seat). Kanopolis is on the banks of the Smoky Hill River and near Kanopolis Lake, a resivoir.

Fort Harker is at Kanopolis and was a frontier Army post originally founded in 1864 as Fort Ellsworth.

Mushroom Rock State Park near Kanopolis features large sandstone boulders balanced on pedestals of softer rock.

Comments: On the main roads traffic seems hectic. My wife and I visited the place a couple months back. Watch out for weather surprises towards evening. Prices of homes sure seem to have jumped since our previous trip. This place IMHO has quite a few grumpy people pumping gas. For some fine exhibits, make a point of visiting Fort Harker. It's worth the admission!
