Republican River. Construction began in 1962, taking 6 years. The largest man-made lake in Kansas with 15,700 surface acres of water. Over 33,000 acres of land resources are managed for protection of the projects natural and cultural resources. Approximately 70% of the land resources are available for public hunting.
The U.S.A.C.E. operates 8 park areas at the Milford project. Also there is Milford State Park, Geary County Park, and a park operated through the city of Milford. Together these facilities offer many diverse recreational opportunities. Camping, cabin rental, marinas, boating, swimming, fishing, playgrounds, hunting, hiking, wildlife watching, off-road vehicle trails, bicycle trails (including mountain biking), etc. Junction City, a nearby town of approximately 19,000 people offers motels, restaurants, and other needs for the Milford Lake visitor.
