Central Region of the state, in
Lyon County. On the border of
Osage County. The town is near the NW tip of
Melvern Lake on state Rt. 170. Reading is a pleasant little village of 247 inhabitants, (down from 715 in 1880). This community is located on rolling prairie, 15 mi. northeast of
Emporia and 14 mi. southwest of
Osage City, on the A., T. & S. Fe Railway, and 2 mi. south of the
Marais des Cygnes River. It was an important local stop for the railroad.
