Population (year 2000): 1,924, Males: 876 (45.5%), Females: 1,048 (54.5%), Elevation: 2465 feet. WaKeeney is located in Trego County (of which it is the county seat), within the North Central Region of the state on US Interstate-70 and is between Hays City and Quinter on Highway 40.

Nearly equidistant from Denver, Kansas City and Omaha. There are three streams running west to east in the Wakeeney area, the Saline River, the Smoky Hill River and Big Creek.
