Cane Ridge Meeting House |
This meeting house is the site where Barton W. Stone formed the Disciples of Christ Church in 1804; the original structure contained a raised-box pulpit high over the congregation and a slave gallery that was accessed by ladder. Built in 1791 as a P resbyterian church, the building is believed to be the largest one-room structure standing in North America. The church's graveyard is the burial site of Stone, as well as many other early settlers. The historic building is still in use, serving as the site of worship services, weddings, lectures, and other special events.
Since 1957, the original church has been encased in a rare tan Cane Ridge stone superstructure for preservation. A small museum contains church mementoes, historical Stone family and Stone-Campbell movement items, and a collection of frontier antiques and tools; curators provide talks and tours for visitors. Picnic facilities are avialable on the grounds.
Open daily; museum closed for the winter.
