Daniel Boone National Forest |
The Daniel Boone National Forest, established in 1937, covers more than 694,985 acres of eastern Kentucky, including portions of 21 counties. Cave Run Lake, the Zilpo Scenic Byway and the Tater Knob Fire Tower are all outstanding sites. There are plenty of opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking, hunting, swimming and nature study.
The 257-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail extends the length of the forest and links many of its more developed recreation areas. Covering 26,500 acres near Slade, the Red River Gorge Geological Area contains more than 50 natural arches, including Sky Bridge, which offers a panoramic view of the gorge.
Wheelchair-accessible campsites exist at some campgrounds.
