General Butler State Resort Park |
Located 44 miles east of Louisville, this historic park is a multi-use, year-round recreation area at the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio rivers. Facilities include basketball courts, a nine-hole golf course, miniature golf, and tennis courts; other recreation includes swimming, fishing and a boat dock on Butler Lake, two nature trails, and boat and canoe rentals. A scenic overlook at one of the highest points in the county, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, provides a unique look at the surrounding countryside.
The Turpin House, the restored and furnished home of Kentucky's distinguished Butler family, which include Generals William Orlando and Thomas Butler, is also on the grounds; tours are given February through December. Accomodations within the park are available at the Butler Lodge, and cottage rentals; a campground is operational year-round. Picnic facilities and playgrounds are also located within the park.
