Completed in 1924, the 351-foot obelisk is one of the largest monuments in the United States and marks the birthplace of the President of the Confederate States of America. A strong supporter of state's rights, Davis played an active role in the early years of the United States; he was a presidential elector, congressman and Secretary of War prior to the secession of the South.
The monument includes an elevator to an observation room at the top of the structure which provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. A recently constructed visitors center features a DVD presentation on the political life of Davis, and the history of the little known Kentucky 'Orphan Brigade.' The 19-acre site includes picnic facilities and playgrounds. Located 7 miles west of Elkton, open daily May through the end of October, 9-5 daily.
The monument will be closed during 2001 for repair of its stone facing, with a projected reopening in 2004.
