William Whitley House St. Historic Site

Built in 1785-92 by pioneer scout and Indian fighter Colonel William Whitley, this is the first brick home constructed in Kentucky. Known as Sportsman's Hill, the estate was renowned for its unusual architectural features; it was here that Whitley built the country's first circular racetrack in 1788. The unusual Flemish bond pattern is used on all four outer walls of the house, with the initials WW on the front side and EW on the back. The interior features details of craftsmanship such as carved eagles on the stairstep footers, S-shaped carvings over the fireplace, and a hidden staircase.

Tours of the House Museum, which features original period pieces, are led by costumed interpreters from mid-March through December 31; picnic facilities and a playground are available on the 10-acre site, and special events are hosted here throughout the year.
