French Quarter |
The French Quarter, or Vieux Carr, means old square. Established in 1718 by the French as a military outpost to protect their interests and provide a port for commerce, the Vieux Carr spent the first half-century of its existence as a decidedly French settlement. The original citizens of New Orleans proudly embraced and celebrated their French heritage.
It is now a site of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, established in 1978 to help preserve and interpret the cultural diversity of the Mississippi Delta region.
