The Presbytere faces Jackson Square on the east of the basilcia at 751 Chartres Street. Though begun in 1793 as an ecclesiastical house, the building was not completed for use as court chambers until 1813. There is no record that the Presbytere ever served the function indicated by its name, although it remained church property until it was acquired by the city in 1853. Now part of the Louisiana State Museum complex, the Presbytere houses the Louisiana Portrait Gallery and changing exhibits about the history and culture of Louisiana.
