St. Charles in
St. Mary's County, Coltons Point lies on Hwy 242 at the edge of the Potomac River and of Clements Bay. It faces St. Clements Island, where the `Ark` and the `Dove`, carrying the first Maryland settlers, dropped anchor on March 25, 1634. On this Potomac River island, Gov. Leonard Calvert and Jesuit Father Andrew White erected a large wooden cross and performed the first Roman Catholic Mass in the English-speaking Colonies. A replica of the `Dove` is permanently docked at
St. Mary's City on the St Mary's River.
