Merrymeeting Bay covers 9000 acres at the confluence of six rivers. Two of them are among the largest in Maine -- the
Kennebec River and the
Androscoggin River. Four small rivers also flow into the bay -- the Eastern, the Abagadasset, Cathance and Muddy rivers. The bay is actually an inland estuary, since it is cut off from salt water. Although it is affected by tides, there is almost no salt in its waters. The bay is home to several threatened and endangered species.
